You don’t want to go into your own money if you have a mishap, so it’s always a good idea to take out as much insurance as you can comfortably afford.

For RVs that are motorhomes, state law requires you to carry liability insurance with the following minimums: bodily injury, $20,000 per person, $40,000 per accident; property damage, $10,000 per accident. Also, if you financed your RV, the lender may require collision and/or comprehensive. For a 5th wheel or travel trailer, you can sometimes add insurance to your auto policy, but this may not provide adequate coverage.

Rates depend on the make and size of your RV, your driving history, and other factors. If you do not live in your motorhome year-round, you can save money with a “storage option,” which suspends coverages, such as collision, when you’re not traveling, but keeps you insured for fire, theft, and other losses.

Collision covers repair costs if your RV is damaged in an accident. Comprehensive covers your losses in non-collision events, such as theft, vandalism, falling objects, and storms.
